Women's Soccer Gets First AMCC Win at Medaille

10/15/2016 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer snapped its five-game losing streak on Saturday evening and picked up its first conference victory of the fall, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille College 2-1 at All High Stadium.

Madison McConnell (Turbotville, PA/Warrior Run) and Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored goals for the Lady Lions (4-9-1, 1-4-1 AMCC).

Molly Malone (Altoona, PA/Altoona) made five saves in goal for Penn State Altoona for her fourth win of the season.

McConnell broke a 0-0 tie at 30:38 when she scored her second goal of the season, an unassisted score that put Penn State Altoona up 1-0.

Medaille (0-13, 0-7 AMCC) tied the game shortly into the second half, when Michelle Carpenter found the back of the net to even the score 1-1.

But just under 20 minutes later, the Lady Lions retook the lead for good. Mahoney took a cross from Marissa Panasiti (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) and scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to put her team up 2-1.

Penn State Altoona posted a 23-14 advantage over Medaille in total shots, including putting 13 shots on goal to the Lady Mavericks' six. The Lady Lions also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Penn State Altoona women's soccer returns home for another AMCC game on Tuesday, October 19, when the team hosts Franciscan University for a 5:00 p.m. contest at Spring Run Stadium.

Notes: Malone, Penn State Altoona's sophomore goalkeeper, set a new single season saves record for the Lady Lions soccer program with her five saves on Saturday; she passed former Lady Lion Veronique Larin, who made 146 saves in the 2002 season, to establish a new single season record with 150 saves this year...Mahoney continued to ascend the Penn State Altoona women's soccer all-time goals scored list, moving into a tie for sixth place all-time with her goal on Saturday; Mahoney, a junior forward, is tied with former Lady Lion Elizabeth Watt (2008-2011) with 19 career goals scored.
