Lady Lions' Season Ends With Double Overtime Loss

10/25/2016 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's soccer nearly pulled off an upset in its final game of the season on Tuesday night, but Pitt-Greensburg overcame a deficit to hand the Lady Lions a 2-1 loss in double overtime at Spring Run Stadium.

Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (4-12-1, 1-7-1) in the loss, and Molly Malone (Altoona, PA/Altoona) made four stops in goal for the Lady Lions.

Penn State Altoona carried the momentum for much of the first half, outshooting Pitt-Greensburg by a 10-5 margin en route to a 0-0 tie at the intermission.

The Lady Lions finally cashed in early in the second half when Mahoney took a long ball from Malone down the middle of the field, then fired a shot on goal that deflected off of the goalkeeper's fingertips and into net top shelf.

The goal was Mahoney's 20th of her career for the Lady Lions, moving her into sixth place on the program's all-time goals scored list.

But Pitt-Greensburg (9-7-2, 7-1-1 AMCC) got on the board at 83:55 when Brianna Burgunder took a pass from Kayleen Schwegler and fired a shot on goal from eight yards out. The ball slipped through the goalkeeper's grasp and into the net, tying the score 1-1.

With the score still tied, the game advanced to overtime. After a scoreless first period, Burgunder struck again in the second overtime period to give Pitt-Greensburg the victory. A foul in the penalty box set Burgunder up for a penalty kick try, and she converted to give the Lady Bobcats the walkoff win.

Penn State Altoona held a 19-13 advantage over Pitt-Greensburg on the night in total shots attempted, and the teams tied 7-7 in shots on goal. The Lady Bobcats led 4-1 in corner kicks.

Notes: Penn State Altoona senior midfielder Rhi Miller (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and senior defender Libby Strayer (McConnellsburg, PA/McConnellsburg) were recognized in a pregame ceremony as part of the team's Senior Day.
