Men's and Women's Swim Teams Defeat Pitt-Bradford

10/29/2016 — ALTOONA, Pa. - In their first home meet of the 2016-2017 season, the Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams each posted a win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford on Saturday afternoon in the Adler Natatorium.

The men's squad prevailed 104-96, while the women's team won 100-38.

On the men's side, the Lions picked up a season-best six first place finishes.

In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Allen Shmurak (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North), David Heckel (Lititz, PA/Warwick), Gino Cercone (Allison Park, PA/Shaler), and Connor Fanks (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside Beaver County) notched a first place finish with a combined time of 1:42.91.

John Polidoro (Bensalem, PA/Holy Ghost Preparatory) followed that by winning the 1000 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 11:14.97.

In the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle, Shmurak came in first with a time of 1:53.36. Later in the meet, he finished in first place in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 55.73.

Heckel won the 200 Yard IM, recording a time of 2:05.32. He picked up another first place finish later in the meet, when he won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.42.

Meanwhile, the Lady Lions tallied a season-high eight first place finishes.

The women's team opened the meet by winning the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as Paetyn Zeamer (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), Ariana Paulhamus (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore), Emily Beam (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), and Maria Gibson (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights) combined for a time of 2:09.25.

Eva Gerhart (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) got first place in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, which she finished in 12:58.03.

Gibson prevailed in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 29.00.

Zeamer followed that by taking first in the 200 Yard IM, clocking in at 2:23.55. She won the next event, the 100 Yard Butterfly, with a time of 1:05.89.

Christina Grieco (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) finished atop the standings in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:05.05.

In the 100 Yard Backstroke, Sheclyia King-Allsopp (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) was first with a time of 1:22.26.

The Lady Lions won their final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, in which the team of Gerhart, Alexis Franks (Pleasant Gap, PA/Bellefonte), King-Allsoppp, and Grieco posted a combined time of 1:57.74.

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams hit the road on Friday, November 4 to compete against Bethany College. That dual meet is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
