Men's Swimming Defeats Cabrini, Women's Swimming Falls to Cavs

12/2/2016 — ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams split meets against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Cabrini University on Friday afternoon in the Adler Natatorium, with the Lions edging the Cavaliers 95-90 and the Lady Lions falling 134-59.

The men's team totaled five first place finishes to help push past Cabrini.

In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the squad of Dominic Woods (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood), Tom Weir (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), Gino Cercone (Allison Park, PA/Shaler), and John Polidoro (Bensalem, PA/Holy Ghost Preparatory) took first place with a combined time of 1:48.65.

In the next men's event, the 1000 Yard Freestyle, David Heckel (Lititz, PA/Warwick) came in first with a time of 10:57.34.

Allen Shmurak (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) recorded two individual first place finishes in the meet. He won the 50 Yard Freestyle by clocking in at 23.10, and he later took first in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 50.82.

The decision in the men's meet came down to the final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Penn State Altoona grabbed the win to edge Cabrini by five points in the final score, as Shmurak, Gregory Landis (York, PA/West York), Heckel, and Connor Fanks (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside Beaver County) combined for a first place time of 1:35.87.

The victory marks the Lions' second win over an AMCC opponent in a dual meet this season.

For the Lady Lions, the team tallied three first place finishes.

Eva Gerhart (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) recorded two of her team's three first places. She came in first in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:13.67, and she later prevailed in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:21.87.

Emily Beam (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) accounted for the other win, as she finished atop the standings in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:11.94.

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams host another home meet next Friday, December 9 against non-conference opponent Wilkes University. The start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
