Men's Swimming Posts 77-17 Win at Wells


1/17/2017 — AURORA, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona men's swimming notched a big win on Tuesday night, defeating non-conference opponent Wells College 77-17.

The Lions swept the meet in impressive fashion, winning all 11 events to record their sixth dual meet victory of the season.

Penn State Altoona got the evening started with a victory in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, as Dominic Woods (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood), Tom Weir (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), Gino Cercone (Allison Park, PA/Shaler), and Caleb Marasco (Altoona, PA/Altoona) combined for a time of 1:51.13 to come in first place.

Gregory Landis (York, PA/West York) followed that up with a victory in the 1,650 Yard Freestyle, coming in first place with a time of 20:22.20.

Allen Shmurak (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) won the next men's event, topping the standings in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:56.95. Later in the meet, he finished first in the 200 Yard Backstroke by clocking in at 2:09.09.

Benjamin McConnell (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) placed first in the 50 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 24.46. Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) earned a first place, finishing the 400 Yard IM to win with a time of 4:58.23. Cercone prevailed in the 200 Yard Butterfly, touching the pad at 2:14.88 to win the event.

David Heckel (Lititz, PA/Warwick) triumphed in the 100 Yard Freestyle, placing first with a time of 52.91. He picked up another first place in the 200 Yard Breaststroke later in the meet, finishing in 2:22.50.

John Polidoro (Bensalem, PA/Holy Ghost Preparatory) got in on the action with a first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle, edging out the second place finisher by just 1.07 seconds with a time of 5:31.90.

The Lions grabbed their 11th first place finish of the meet when they won the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. The team of Heckel, Yaw, Shmurak, and Connor Fanks (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside Beaver County) combined for a time of 1:36.38 to place first in the event.

Next up for Penn State Altoona men's swimming, the team welcomes non-conference opponents Bethany College and Frostburg State University to the Adler Natatorium this Saturday, January 21. The tri-meet is the final home date of the season for the team, and the start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
