Men's Swimming Splits With Bethany, Frostburg in Home Finale




1/21/2017 — ALTOONA, Pa. - In its final home date of the 2016-2017 season, the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team posted a 126-42 win over Bethany College while being edged 100-96 by Frostburg State University in a tri-meet at the Adler Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win over Bethany, the Lions finish the regular season with seven dual meet victories. Penn State Altoona recorded five first place finishes during Saturday's meet.

David Heckel (Lititz, PA/Warwick) came in first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 1:53.56.

Allen Shmurak (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) followed that by winning the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.02. Later in the meet, Shmurak achieved another first place when he won the 100 Yard Backstroke in 56.79.

Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) prevailed in the 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing in 58.09 to clinch first place.

The Lions capped the meet with a first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, as Shmurak, Gregory Landis (York, PA/West York), Heckel, and Connor Fans (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside Beaver County) combined for a time of 1:34.34 to win the event.

Next up for the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team is the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, held on February 9-11 at Penn State Behrend.

Notes: The Lions recognized Fanks, the lone senior swimmer on the men's squad, as part of their Senior Day ceremonies during the meet on Saturday.
