Byers Named NEAC Defensive Player of the Week

1/25/2017 — GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona senior outside hitter Jacob Byers (Level Green, PA/Penn Trafford) earned his second award of the week on Tuesday evening, when the North Eastern Athletic Conference tabbed him as its Defensive Player of the Week in men's volleyball.

On Monday, Byers earned Player of the Week honors from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Lions' secondary league for men's volleyball. The next day, he was recognized for his performance last week from the team's primary men's volleyball conference, the NEAC.

Byers put up big numbers -- both defensively and offensively -- to help Penn State Altoona open its schedule with a 2-1 record, going up against some strong non-conference competition in the Jim Coleman Invitational, which was hosted at Wittenberg University last Friday and Saturday.

In a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia University on Friday night, Byers had 11 digs and four total blocks, and he added 12 kills and two service aces. In a 3-1 loss to Mount Saint Joseph University on Saturday evening, the senior finished with 10 digs and three total blocks, and he also chipped in 15 kills and one ace. Later that night, Byers helped Penn State Altoona defeat Wittenberg 3-1, recording six digs and three total blocks to go along with 19 kills and three aces. At the conclusion of the weekend, he was named to the All-Tournament Team for his exceptional performance in the Coleman Invitational.

For the week, Byers averaged 3.83 kills per set, 2.25 digs per set, 0.83 blocks per set, and 0.50 aces per set.

Penn State Altoona men's volleyball is back in action on Saturday, January 28, when the Lions will travel to face AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend for a 4:30 p.m. match.
