Lions in Fourth, Lady Lions in Fifth After First Night of AMCC Championships

2/9/2017 — ALTOONA, Pa. - The 2016-2017 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Swimming Championships got underway on Wednesday evening at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center, as conference teams competed in a pair of events to open the four-day championship.

In Wednesday night's action, AMCC teams competed in the Men's and Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relays. By the conclusion of those swims, the Penn State Altoona men's team was in fourth place out of five teams with a point total of 22. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions team was in fifth place out of six teams with 20 points.

Penn State Behrend was in first place in both the men's and women's rankings with 46 points in each.

In the Men's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, Penn State Altoona's squad of Gregory Landis (York, PA/West York), Gino Cercone (Allison Park, PA/Shaler), Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), and John Polidoro (Bensalem, PA/Holy Ghost Preparatory) combined for a time of 7:42.44 to come in fourth place and grab 22 points.

In the Women's 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Emily Beam (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), Sheclyia King-Allsopp (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln), Christina Grieco (Monroeville, PA/Gateway), and Maria Gibson (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights) came together for a total time of 9:29.71 to secure 20 points.

Competition resumes tomorrow, Thursday, February 9 for day two of the AMCC Championships. The action gets underway at 10:00 a.m. with preliminaries in the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard IM, and 50 Yard Freestyle. Then, starting at 6:00 p.m., teams will swim in the finals for the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard IM, and 400 Yard Medley Relay.
