After Three Days, Lions Stay in Fifth at AMCC Championships
2/10/2017 — ERIE, Pa. - Three days into the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Swimming Championships at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center, the Penn State Altoona men's swimming team remained in fifth place.
The Lions had a total team score of 176 following Friday night's finals to rank fifth out of five men's squads. Penn State Behrend was in first place with 521 points, and Pitt-Bradford moved into second place with 273 points.
Allen Shmurak (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) posted a record-setting performance in the 'A' cut final of the 100 Yard Backstroke, during which he placed third to secure 12 points with a time of 55.24. That time broke Penn State Altoona men's swimming's previous team record of 55.48.
The Lions started the night by grabbing 20 points with a fifth place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay 'A' final, as the team of Shmurak, Tom Weir (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and Connor Fanks (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside Beaver County) recorded a combined time of 1:42.49.
Yaw scored 11 points in the 'A' final for the 100 Yard Butterfly, as he swam to a fourth place finish in 54.20.
Penn State Altoona men's swimming wraps its week up in the fourth and final day of the AMCC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 11. Preliminaries get underway at 10:00 a.m. for the 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, and 200 Yard Butterfly. The finals are slated to start at 5:15 p.m. and will include races in the 1,650 Freestyle, 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
