Lions Volleyball Splits Matches in Elmira Invitational



2/11/2017 — ELMIRA, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona men's volleyball finished with one win and one loss in Saturday afternoon's Elmira College Invitational at the Speidel Gymnasium.

In Penn State Altoona's (6-3) first match of the afternoon, the Lions came close to upsetting the 15th-ranked team in the nation, Lasell College. After Lasell (12-1) took a 2-0 lead with 25-20 and 25-13 wins in the first two sets, Penn State Altoona battled back to win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-18. But Lasell prevailed 15-7 in the fifth set to escape with the win.

Bradley Colditz (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) led the Lions in kills with 12 and added two block assists. Daniel Downs (Reading, PA/Daniel Boone) finished with 11 kills and two block assists. Brandon Arentz (Mount Wolf, PA/Northeastern) added five kills and three total blocks (one solo block, two block assists), and he also tallied nine digs.

Justin Bannister (Willow Hill, PA/Fannett-Metal) led Penn State Altoona in blocks with six total (one solo block, five block assists). Brian Sheddy (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) had a match-high three service aces.

Tommy Kisick (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) led the Lions in set assists with 24, and he also chipped in two block assists. Waldemar Rivera-Berrios (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Samuel Clemens) led all players in the match with 20 digs.

Penn State Altoona bounced back to cruise past Southern Vermont College (0-6) in the Lions' second and final match of the day, winning 25-10, 25-12, 25-15.

Dylan Appleman (Roaring Spring, PA/Central) led the Lions in kills with seven, and he tied for the team-high in digs with seven. Bannister added six kills, while Downs and Ryan Dry (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) had five kills apiece. Downs also contributed one solo block and one block assist.

Jonathan Ruhl (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) tied for the team lead in digs with seven. Kisick again led the Lions in set assists with 16, and Billy Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) added 13 assists.

Next up, the Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team ventures back into North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18 at Lancaster Bible College. On Friday, the Lions face Hilbert College and Medaille College at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, they play D'Youville College at 11:00 a.m.
