Lions Basketball Earns ECAC Tournament Berth

2/27/2017 — DANBURY, Conn. - The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team has been selected to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III Championship Tournament, as the conference announced its 12-team field on Monday afternoon.

The Lions (14-13) will travel to play Bethany College (15-12) this Wednesday, March 1 in a Region 1 first round game that is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that contest will face Moravian College (19-8), the tournament's top overall seed, on Friday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament quarterfinals hosted at Penn State Behrend.

"We are extremely excited that the ECAC chose us as one of the 12 teams to compete for their postseason championship. It rewards us for our competitive schedule and our constant improvement from the beginning of the season to the end," said Penn State Altoona head coach David McGreal. "To be one of the last 76 Division III teams overall that are still getting a chance to compete is truly an honor. I'm so happy for this senior class to get another chance to play together at a highly competitive level."

Penn State Altoona, which was 12-6 in-conference, lost in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference semifinal round on Saturday to eventual champion Medaille College, but now the Lions will have an opportunity to continue their season with their second-ever postseason berth into the ECAC playoffs. The team last competed in the ECAC Tournament at the end of the 2008-2009 season, suffering a loss to Cabrini College.

In addition to its 15-12 overall record, Bethany finished with a 9-9 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Bison followed a similar conference tournament path to that of Penn State Altoona, as Bethany won its first round game before being eliminated in the semifinals. Last Tuesday, the Bison defeated Westminster College 90-66 before being knocked out of the PAC Tournament by Saint Vincent College with a 74-65 loss on Thursday.

Bethany holds an 8-2 lead over Penn State Altoona in the teams' all-time series. The previous meeting between the two squads was on December 10, 2007, when the Lions traveled to Bethany and earned a 68-65 win.
