Softball Loses to Bridgewater, Defiance in Sunday Action
3/5/2017 — KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Penn State Altoona softball suffered a pair of losses on Sunday in the Central Florida Rebel Spring Games, falling 6-1 to Bridgewater College and 8-0 to Defiance College at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
"I told the team to shower these games off, hit the reset button, and come back prepared to play PSU Altoona softball tomorrow," said Penn State Altoona head coach Joe Merilli. "We went through the same hitting slump last year at the beginning of the season. We'll figure it out and get it back."
The Lady Lions (1-3) were limited to just four hits in their first game of the day, a five-run loss to Bridgewater (1-3).
Lauren O'Donnell (Beccaria, PA/Moshannon Valley) led the way by hitting 2-for-3 with one run batted in. Kelsey Bristol (Troy, PA/Troy) batted 1-for-2, and Jessica Willits (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Sidney Shultz (Runville, PA/Bald Eagle) started in the circle for Penn State Altoona and took the loss after she pitched two innings and gave up five runs. Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) entered in relief, tossing four innings and limiting Bridgewater to one run while striking out four.
Bridgewater scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Lindsey Tally came home on a groundout. The Eagles plated four runs in the third, courtesy of a bases loaded walk drawn by Victoria Gontarz, a two-run single from Carlita Tibbs, and an RBI base hit by Mikalia Guard.
Penn State Altoona got on the board in the top of the fifth on O'Donnell's RBI hit that made it 5-1.
But Bridgewater answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fifth, getting a pinch-hit RBI single from Allison Patrick.
In game two, Penn State Altoona's bats continued to cool off, as the Lady Lions were no-hit.
Morgan Brumbaugh (James Creek, PA/Tussey Mountain) started in the circle and pitched a complete game for the Lady Lions.
Defiance (1-1) opened the scoring in the top of the first on Kaity Kuhn's sacrifice fly to left. They made it 4-0 in the second following a two-run triple by Jordan Osborne and a run-scoring sac bunt from Emily Denhard. Jackie Hartman led off the third inning with a home run to put her team ahead 5-0.
Defiance added two more runs in the sixth, getting an RBI single from Haley Patty and an RBI groundout by Mariah Huff. An error helped Defiance plate its eighth run in the seventh inning.
Penn State Altoona softball is back in action tomorrow, Monday, March 6 against Montclair State University at 11:15 a.m. and then versus Penn State Berks at 1:30 p.m., with both of those games occurring at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
