Men's Volleyball Defeats Lancaster Bible, Wilson to Clinch NEAC Top Seed

4/1/2017 — LANCASTER, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's volleyball secured its first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference regular season championship on Saturday afternoon, when it closed out its regular season conference schedule with a pair of 3-0 wins against Lancaster Bible College and Wilson College at the Horst Athletic Center.

The Lions (21-5, 15-1 NEAC) sealed the top spot in the conference with their win over Lancaster Bible that opened Saturday's tri-match. As the regular season champion, Penn State Altoona has earned the top seed in the NEAC Tournament and will host the final two rounds of the conference playoffs in the Adler Gym. The Lions will host two semifinal matches on Friday, April 14 and the championship match on Saturday, April 15. The NEAC champion then receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

"We are humbled and thankful for the opportunity to host the NEAC championship for the first time ever," said Penn State Altoona head coach Phil Peterman. "We are extremely excited to compete at home for the NEAC's bid into the NCAA Tournament."

Penn State Altoona swept Lancaster Bible (24-8, 11-4) by scores of 29-27, 25-16, and 25-18 to start Saturday's action.

Bradley Colditz (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) had a match-high 12 kills while adding five digs and a solo block. Jacob Byers (Level Green, PA/Penn Trafford) posted nine kills.

Brandon Arentz (Mount Wolf, PA/Northeastern) had seven kills, four digs, one solo block, and one block assist. Daniel Downs (Reading, PA/Daniel Boone) finished with six kills and two service aces.

Tommy Kisick (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) led the team with 18 assists, and Billy Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) added 16 assists and four digs.

Waldemar Rivera-Berrios (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Samuel Clemens) led all players with seven digs. Brian Sheddy (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) contributed five digs.

In their second and final match of the day, the Lions earned their 15th conference win of the season by sweeping Wilson (8-20, 5-10 NEAC) 25-16, 29-27, 25-19.

Arentz led the Lions in kills with nine, and he also put up 12 digs. Byers posted eight kills, and Colditz had seven kills and six digs. Downs recorded six kills while leading the team in blocks with one solo block and two block assists.

Kisick had a team-best 22 assists, and Smith finished with 13 assists.

Rivera-Berrios had a match-high 16 digs.

Next up, Penn State Altoona men's volleyball heads back into non-conference play on Wednesday, April 5, traveling to face Wilkes University for a 7:30 p.m. match.
