Men's Golf Finishes Fourth in Mount Aloysius Invitational

9/18/2017 — CRESSON, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's golf placed fourth out of 15 teams in Sunday afternoon's Mount Aloysius College Invitational at the Summit Country Club.

The Lions shot 309, ranking ahead of fellow Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schools Medaille College (6th Place - 316), Pitt-Bradford (7th Place - 323), Mount Aloysius (11th Place - 329), and Hilbert College (13th Place - 338).

Penn State Altoona's score of 309 was the 'A' team's second-best team score of the season.

"I am really proud of how our guys are fighting through tough rounds. We aren't close to playing our best, but we are keeping our scores respectable," said Penn State Altoona golf head coach Tom Koehle. "We will need to clean up our rounds, limit mistakes, and find a solid third and fourth score before the conference championship. La Roche and Behrend are just playing easily the best golf the AMCC has ever seen, and we are right behind them, just one score away each round."

For the 'A' team, Pongthong Thongyai (Patum Thani, Thailand/New Mexico Military Institute) tied for fourth place individually with a score of 74 on the par 72 course. Luke Hoffnagle (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) also recorded a score of 74 to tie for fourth place.

Payton Guelich (Sandy Ridge, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) shot 79 for the Lions on the 'A' team. Carter Fischer (Bellefonte, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) finished with an 82, and Hunter Duriez (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) shot an 83.

"Individually, Pete really came to the top, as he had the third-lowest combined score over the past two days. That's right where we expect him to be, a leader in the conference," said Koehle. "Luke came back from a rough start to yesterday's round to shoot another solid round today. He's a quiet leader on our team, using his clubs to do the talking."

"Payton Guelich was able to back up his great debut round today with a nice round of 79," Koehle added. "He had a couple hiccups in the middle of his scorecard, but he rebounded nicely. He's earned his way into the lineup heading to La Roche on Tuesday."

For Penn State Altoona's 'B' team, Jimmy Gillespie (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) led the way with a 76 to tie for 11th place individually.

Ely Roselius (Moon Township, PA/Moon) fired an 83, Jake Mrvos (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) carded an 84, and Chris Michelone (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Mateo Scott (Lima, Peru/Highlands International School) each finished with an 85.

Individuals also competed for Penn State Altoona, as Matt Krupa (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) shot 84 and Clayton Hagenbuch (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) finished with a 92.

On the women's side, Penn State Altoona sophomore Claudia Ochoa (Fairfax, VA/Robinson Secondary) shot 102 to finish in seventh place among the women's golfers.

Next up, Penn State Altoona golf will compete in the La Roche College Invitational on Tuesday, September 19 at 12:00 p.m. at Wildwood Golf Club.
