Mounties Overpower Lions 5-2

10/5/2017 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's soccer suffered a 5-2 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius College on Wednesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.

Ben Jago (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and Vikrant Kumar (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) each scored goals for the Lions (3-9, 2-2 AMCC). Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) made nine saves in the loss.

The Mount Aloysius (9-2-1, 2-1 AMCC) offense was powered by Joshua Devlin, who scored a hat trick and also recorded an assist. Devlin put the Mounties on the board at 11:33, when he took a centering pass from Will Funez and chipped a shot past the goalkeeper. At 17:09, Devlin made it 2-0 when he scored on a shot from 15 yards out.

After Mount Aloysius held a two-goal lead at halftime, both teams combined for five scores in the second half.

Jago cut the Mounties' lead in half at 62:51, when he sent a long, looping shot into the top right corner of the goal to make it 2-1. The goal was Jago's second of the season.

But Mount Aloysius answered quickly, as Devlin scored his third goal of the game at 64:25 on a 10-yard shot. Funez upped the Mounties' advantage to 4-1 at 72:11 when he scored on a shot from five yards.

Kumar tallied another goal for Penn State Altoona at 81:40, when he fired a shot past the goalkeeper from near the top of the penalty box. It was Kumar's second goal of the season.

Mount Aloysius made it 5-2 at 83:35 when Graham Hunter capitalized on a turnover, taking an errant pass and sending a shot from 18 yards out into the open goal.

The Mounties led Penn State Altoona in total shots attempted (21-8) and shots on goal (14-4). Each team had five corner kicks apiece.

Lions soccer returns to action on Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m., when the team hosts AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend at Spring Run Stadium.
