Men's Tennis Goes 2-0 Saturday, Wins Back Draw of Beren Invitational
3/25/2017 — MARIETTA, Ohio - In Saturday's action in the Beren Tennis Invitational at Marietta College, the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team posted victories over Bethany College and Waynesburg University to win the back draw of the tournament.
Following Friday's loss to Thomas More College, Penn State Altoona (3-3) opened up Saturday against Bethany (0-2) in the semifinal round of the back draw. The Lions edged the Bison by a 5-4 decision.
In doubles play, Bethany won two out of three to take the early lead in the match. Penn State Altoona salvaged a point in No. 2 doubles, where the duo of Thomas Graden (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin)/Luke Key (Harrisburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) earned an 8-1 win.
The Lions turned the tables in singles play, winning four out of six to come back and win the match by one point.
In No. 1 singles, Jake Colledge (Altoona, PA/Altoona) battled for a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) victory over his opponent. Graden and Carlos Cevallos (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park) cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, respectively. Jared Harshbarger (Somerset, PA/Somerset) rounded out the group with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles.
With the win over Bethany, Penn State Altoona advanced to the championship match of the back draw. The Lions faced Waynesburg (3-8), which advanced to the final after a 6-3 win over Muskingum University earlier on Saturday. But the Lions handled the Yellow Jackets, posting an 8-1 win to secure first place in the back draw.
Penn State Altoona swept the doubles matches against Waynesburg to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The pair of Colledge/Jonathan D'Arcy (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) prevailed 8-6 in No. 1 doubles, and Graden/Key followed with an 8-6 win of their own in No. 2 doubles. Cevallos/Harshbarger picked up an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles slot.
The Lions went on to win five out of six in singles. Colledge earned a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win in No. 1 singles, and D'Arcy played to a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 flight. Graden won 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4, Cevallos prevailed 8-2 in No. 5, and Harshbarger posted an 8-1 triumph in the No. 6 singles match.
Next, Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Friday, March 31 when it hosts Penn State Behrend for a home match at ProCare Fitness Center in Altoona. Start time for that match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
