Men’s Basketball Volunteers at Military Appreciation Event
11/8/2016 — UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - November is Military Appreciation Month, and the Penn State Altoona men’s basketball team showed its support by volunteering at an event for veterans on Saturday, November 5 at Penn State University’s Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State and the Bryce Jordan Center hosted Military Appreciation Day, an event where a variety of sponsors and volunteers came together to interact with military veterans and their families while serving meals. Penn State Altoona men’s basketball players and coaches helped to serve over 3,000 meals to veterans and their family members during the event.
Penn State Altoona senior guard/forward Quinn Luhr (Johnsonburg, PA/Johnsonburg), who is also the president of the campus’ Student-Athlete Advisory Council, relished the experience to come together with his team during its preseason while performing some important community service.
"I felt as if it was a great experience for our team to not only bond with each other, but to give back to those who have helped us to be able to play the sport we love by their sacrifices," said Luhr.
Head men’s basketball coach David McGreal echoed Luhr’s sentiments.
"This was a good opportunity to pay our respects to the veterans," said McGreal. "We enjoyed getting the team together to serve meals to so many veterans and their families at the Bryce Jordan Center."
At the event, the Penn State Altoona men’s basketball team also had the chance to meet Penn State President Eric J. Barron.
