Women's Basketball Closes Out Season With 85-60 Loss at Penn State Behrend
2/18/2017 — ERIE, Pa. - In its final game of the 2016-2017 season, the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team suffered a 85-60 loss at Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend in the Junker Center.
"We didn't come to play, and Behrend did," said Penn State Altoona head coach Casey Shoup. "We had moments when we looked put-together, but overall, there was a big disconnect."
Penn State Altoona (6-16, 6-12 AMCC) was led in scoring by its two senior guards, playing in their final career game. Brittany Boslet (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) scored a team-high 15 points while grabbing six rebounds, and Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) put up a season-high 11 points.
"Britt and Nicole played well during their final contest," said Shoup. "We are very proud of their accomplishments, but more importantly, we're thankful for the time and dedication they put in over the course of the past four years."
Paige Burk (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) added 11 points for the Lady Lions. Shannon Zimmerman (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove) had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Penn State Behrend (10-15, 9-9 AMCC) got 22 points and 12 rebounds from Heidi Langhorst. Katie Chess scored 18 and secured eight rebounds, and Rachael Razzano added 15 points. Emily Kinecki tied for the game-high with 12 rebounds and scored 10 points.
Penn State Altoona struggled in the first half, shooting 22.6% (7-for-31) while being limited to just 26 points at the half. Meanwhile, Behrend shot 52.9% (18-for-34) in the first half and put 49 points on the board.
In the first quarter, Penn State Altoona got early buckets from Finnley Christine (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) and Zimmerman to grab a 4-2 lead, but Behrend answered with a 19-5 run to establish an 21-9 advantage by the 3:31 mark. Kaitlin Thomas' three-pointer with five seconds left in the quarter gave the home team a 28-14 lead.
Behrend increased its lead to 23 points by halftime with a 21-12 second quarter scoring advantage. Fastbreak layups from Chess and Sadie Zielinski helped the home squad to a 19-point lead, 35-16, by 6:06. Langhorst's layup two minutes later increased the difference to 20 points, 40-20, and a jumper from Fontaine Glenn and two Razzano free throws made it 49-26 with 33 seconds left in the half.
Behrend went on to expand its lead to as many as 32 points during the second half.
Notes: During the game, Boslet set a new program single season record for three-pointers made with 59. The previous record was 58, which was established by former Lady Lions Kristen Toomey and Kim Ebersole during the 2002-2003 season.
