Greg Scallen is in his seventh year as the head coach for men's and women's swimming and diving programs. In addition to his coaching duties, he is also the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities.

Scallen is no stranger to competitive swimming. He has proven success in a coaching career that spans 20 years as a head coach, having served in that capacity at the club, high school, and collegiate levels. Throughout his tenure as a head coach, his club and high school programs have produced All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, state champions, and numerous student-athletes who continued their swimming careers at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels.

Scallen was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and began his head coaching career at the age of 24 at the city's St. Pius X High School in 1988. Over the next six years, his teams enjoyed the benefits of hard work and the pursuit of personal excellence, a philosophy that proved to be a winning combination. Scallen was also active as a head coach in the Sundance Aquatic Association from 1987 to 1994.

In 1994, Scallen relocated to Central Pennsylvania. He spent one season at Juniata College as the women's swimming head coach for the 1995-1996 campaign. At the conclusion of that season, he was appointed head coach of the boys and girls swimming teams at Hollidaysburg Area High School. He served in that capacity for three seasons before retiring from the role in 1999 to raise his two young children, enter the private business sector, and continue educational goals.

Since his hire at Penn State Altoona in September 2011, Scallen has instilled a culture that demands that his athletes “strive for excellence” in the swimming pool, the classroom, and the community. His first four seasons at Penn State Altoona proved that Scallen’s philosophy and expectations have taken the program to new heights in a positive and productive manner. As a result, both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have realized historical successes within Penn State Altoona athletics, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and NCAA Division III.
